Frost mages rejoice as Water Elemental returns in The War Within pre-patch

Frost mages in World of Warcraft are welcoming back an old companion this month. The Water Elemental, absent for over two years, will return with the The War Within pre-patch. Players have reacted with excitement, sharing memories of the iconic ability on forums and social media.

The Summon Water Elemental ability first appeared in The Burning Crusade expansion. It gave Frost mages a permanent pet, letting them play like Hunters or Warlocks. Later updates removed it, then reintroduced it as a talent in Midnight (patch 12.0.1).

For years, mages could only summon the Water Elemental temporarily through *Icy Veins*, a talent choice. This version was weaker and less reliable than the original permanent pet. Now, the ability returns in full form, restoring the mage's role as a 'pet class'. The official return date is set for January 21, when pre-patch 12.0 launches in Europe. Blizzard's announcement confirmed the change, sparking celebrations among long-time players.

The Water Elemental's comeback marks a major shift for Frost mages. They regain a signature ability that defines their playstyle. Fans are already planning builds and strategies around the returning pet.
