From Rico Suave to rural pastor: Gerardo Mejia's radical reinvention

Gerardo Mejia was once a Latin pop sensation, best known for his 1990s hit Rico Suave. But after years of fame, he turned away from music to focus on faith and family. Now, living in eastern Kentucky, he leads a church and embraces a quieter life centred on his beliefs.

Mejia was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, before moving to Los Angeles in 1976. There, he built a career as a break dancer, actor, and musician. His 1991 single Rico Suave topped charts, making him a household name. But the pressure of fame and his flashy persona began to clash with his personal life.

In 1992, he met Kathy Eicher in Mexico, and the two later married. Despite his success, Mejia struggled to balance his celebrity image with family responsibilities. His marriage eventually ended in separation, a period he later described as one of his hardest. About a decade ago, Mejia relocated to Ashland, Kentucky, hoping to rebuild his life. He and his wife—now reconciled—founded the House of Grace Church in a repurposed warehouse on Greenup Avenue. The building, once an industrial space, now serves as a place of worship for the local community. Today, Mejia no longer performs as *Rico Suave*. Instead, he devotes his time to ministry and sharing his Hispanic heritage with eastern Kentucky. His focus has shifted from stage lights to spiritual work, a change he describes as deeply fulfilling.

Mejia's journey from pop star to pastor marks a dramatic shift in priorities. The House of Grace Church stands as a testament to his new path, rooted in faith and community. For him, the greatest reward now comes not from applause, but from doing what he calls God's work.
