Friday the 13th Smoke Alert Day - Effortlessly Saving Lives, According to VdF-NRW

In an effort to reduce the number of fire victims, fire departments, insurance companies, and safety organisations across Nordrhein-Westfalen have joined forces for the annual Smoke Alarm Day. This year's event, held under the motto "Smoke alarms save lives", will take place nationwide on Friday, 13th of [current month].

The importance of smoke alarms cannot be overstated. In the event of a fire, quick and calm action is crucial. If you discover a fire, it's essential to leave the apartment immediately, closing doors behind you to prevent the spread of smoke. Once outside, alert the fire department by dialling 112.

Smoke alarms should be installed in key areas of your home, including bedrooms, children's rooms, corridors leading to the staircase or outdoors. For maximum safety, these devices should be checked for functionality according to the manufacturer's instructions and at least once a year. Regularly tested smoke alarms, as stated by Maria Koch, a representative for fire safety education and fire safety awareness at the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW, significantly reduce the risk of undetected fires.

Christoph Dohr, head of the damage prevention and risk assessment department of the Provinzial Insurance, echoes this sentiment, emphasising the importance of smoke alarms. He urges all households to protect themselves and their families with a smoke alarm.

For more information and advice, you can visit the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW's website at http://www.vdf.nrw or the local fire department's website at https://www.feuerwehrverband.nrw/verband/themen/brandschutzerziehung-und-brandschutzaufklaerung. If you have any inquiries, you can contact Maria Marschner at the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW e.V., email: [email protected].

In case the escape route is blocked, stay in a smoke-free room, close the door, and make yourself noticeable at the window or balcony. Trust the help of the fire department - your safety is their top priority.

It's also worth noting that smoke alarms are legally required in all federal states, including new buildings and often existing apartments. In Nordrhein-Westfalen, the B&K NRW-Arbeitsschutz GmbH & Co. KG is responsible for the provision of fire safety education and fire safety training, particularly for the training of fire helpers with theory and practical modules.

Reports from fire victims have been collected for this year's event, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety. Let's work together to ensure that everyone goes home safe.
