While enjoying a hiking adventure. - Fresh bear footprints found in Austria.
A diligent hiker (26) detected evidence of a brown bear on Sunday night near Rankweil-Übersaxen (Voralberg). "Following a spore examination performed this morning by regional wildlife ecologist Hubert Schatz, it's evident this is a bear's print," reports Land Vorarlberg.
"No need for alarm. Since this location is a popular recreational zone, specific conduct guidelines are a must," adds the regional wildlife ecologist.
Authorities suggest these "provisional measures in the affected area":
► Be extra vigilant if you're hiking, mountain climbing, or walking.
► Follow marked hiking trails.
► Leash your dogs.
► Refrain from engaging in late-night or twilight strolls through the woodlands.
► Bring indoor your livestock at night.
► Protect beehives with an electric fence.
► Don't leave food or garbage in the forest, huts, or along its edges. Keep garbage inaccessible to the bear.
Notice any bear sightings or encounters, and immediately report them to the closest police headquarters, the relevant district office, or regional wildlife ecologist Hubert Schatz (Tel.: +43 664 6255311, E-Mail: [email protected]).
Last week, a wildlife camera videotaped a brown bear a couple of kilometers away in Lech am Arlberg. No bear sightings have taken place in Vorarlberg since 2006.
A year ago, a bear assault in South Tyrol gained media attention. A bear assaulted a jogger in Val di Sole, resulting in the jogger's death. The bear is now scheduled to be transferred to a wild animal park in Germany.
