Freight movers petition for rescinding raised container handling charges
Bangladesh Freight Forwarders Association (BFFA) Voices Concern Over Port Fee Hike
On the 30th of August, the Bangladesh Freight Forwarders Association (BFFA) held a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha, the capital. The gathering was called to discuss the upcoming increase in container handling fees at Bangladesh's ports.
The BFFA, along with the Ministry of Shipping, has expressed concern over the proposed fee hike. Abrarul Islam, a member of the BFFA, read out a written statement at the briefing, stating that a significant decline in exports due to additional handling charges could severely affect the country's foreign currency earnings.
The BFFA has demanded the withdrawal of a decision made by the Bangladesh Inland Container Depot Association (Bicda) to increase container handling fees at Bangladesh's ports. The increased rates are scheduled to come into effect from the 1st of September.
Abrarul Islam further expressed that Bicda's announcement of a 20-50% increase in container handling fees for export goods has created deep concern within the export and logistics sectors. The BFFA believes that the proposed increase could exacerbate the challenges faced by these sectors, particularly during the ongoing global economic downturn, internal economic and political challenges, rising market instability, and the impact of US tariff policies on trade.
The BFFA leaders warned that the steep hike in charges would significantly raise export costs. They noted the timing of the fee hike as particularly concerning, as it could potentially harm foreign currency earnings. In response, the BFFA has urged the government to intervene urgently to address the issue and safeguard the interests of exporters and the overall economy.
However, no new information was provided about the expected range of the increase in container handling fees. Nor was any further information provided about any potential actions taken or planned by the BFFA in response to the increased fees. The Bangladesh Ministry of Shipping has spoken out in support of the freight forwarders, calling for a review of the fee hike.
