Freiburg's Red Cross secures €80,000 to upgrade emergency and community services

The German Red Cross (DRK) Freiburg Foundation has awarded €80,000 to support local projects across the city. The funds will boost emergency services, youth initiatives, and senior care programmes run by the DRK Freiburg district branch.

First Mayor Ulrich von Kirchbach was also recognised for his years of service on the foundation's advisory board during the announcement.

A large portion of the funding—€32,500—will go toward upgrading the DRK emergency response team's equipment. This includes a high-capacity backup generator and improvements to IT and server infrastructure. Another €25,000 will establish a new training programme for emergency medical staff, using advanced simulation technology.

Volunteer responders in civil protection will receive €7,500 for updated training and exercise materials. Meanwhile, €7,000 has been set aside to strengthen youth programmes, particularly joint efforts between the Youth Red Cross and school first-aid services. The DRK senior centre in March will benefit from €8,000 to develop an outdoor area for its 'Café vis à vis' meeting space. These investments follow broader improvements in DRK Freiburg's resources over the past five years, including better first-aid supplies and digital training tools introduced after the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation's support comes as part of ongoing regional and federal DRK initiatives, though no specific 'German Red Cross Freiburg Foundation' has been publicly documented in previous funding records.

The €80,000 distribution will directly enhance emergency preparedness, youth engagement, and senior welfare in Freiburg. The projects reflect the DRK's continued focus on modernising equipment and training while honouring long-term contributors like Mayor von Kirchbach.
