Freiburg’s New Play Mat Teaches Kids About Sustainable City Travel

Freiburg has launched a new play mat designed to teach children about sustainable transport in the city. The interactive tool turns mobility into a playful experience, helping youngsters explore eco-friendly travel options. Developed with input from local children, the mat is now available for purchase and as part of a holiday raffle.

The play mat was created through a partnership between Freiburg’s Children’s Bureau and the Freiburger Institut für angewandte Pädagogische Forschung (FIPF). Children tested and provided feedback during its development, ensuring it would engage its young audience. The final design includes familiar city landmarks like Freiburg Minster and Martin Gate, alongside features such as bike lanes, trams, buses, car-sharing spots, and electric vehicles.

The initiative aims to familiarise children with Freiburg’s sustainable transport network in an engaging way. By combining education with play, the city hopes to encourage early awareness of eco-friendly travel. The raffle and retail availability ensure the mat reaches a wide audience during the holiday season.
