Fraudster sues betting giants for fueling his AU$4.3M gambling spiral
A convicted fraudster is taking legal action against three major betting firms, claiming they enabled his excessive gambling despite clear warning signs. Aaron Fineff, currently serving a nine-year prison sentence for fraud, alleges Sportsbet, Tabcorp, and Entain failed to investigate his financial behaviour while encouraging high-risk betting that led to losses of over AU$4.3 million.
The case could reshape how betting companies handle customer due diligence and VIP programmes, with potential reforms looming if Fineff succeeds.
Fineff, who defrauded 12 victims of more than AU$3 million, claims the betting firms ignored red flags in his gambling activity. Despite earning around AU$130,000 annually, he lost millions between BetEasy and Ladbrokes. Regulators had previously fined BetEasy and Entain for failing to spot problem-gambling indicators in his betting patterns.
VIP managers allegedly offered incentives to lure Fineff back after periods of inactivity, even though they were aware of his massive losses. Before recent regulatory changes, commission systems rewarded staff for high-volume betting, pushing them to encourage risky behaviour among VIP clients. The case will examine the broader VIP ecosystem in online gambling, including how commission structures may have driven staff to prioritise profits over responsible gambling. Sportsbet and Tabcorp have since removed commission-based pay, while Entain has not commented on the matter. Barrister Geoffrey Watson SC argues that a successful outcome for Fineff could force betting agencies to overhaul compliance procedures, customer checks, and VIP practices. Independent MP Andrew Wilkie, however, believes victims should not have to rely on civil lawsuits to recover losses from gambling operators.
If Fineff wins his case, the ruling may compel betting firms to reform their compliance systems and compensate victims. The legal challenge highlights ongoing concerns about how VIP programmes operate and whether they adequately protect vulnerable gamblers. The outcome could set a precedent for how the industry manages high-risk betting behaviour in the future.
