François-Xavier Roth's career falters after misconduct scandal and costly exit

Conductor François-Xavier Roth has faced ongoing criticism after sending unsolicited inappropriate messages and photos to orchestra members. The incident, which emerged in 2020, led to his departure from the Gürzenich Orchestra under a costly settlement. Since then, his public image and career have shown signs of strain.

The controversy began when Roth sent explicit messages and intimate photos to colleagues without consent. Instead of addressing the issue directly, he responded through legal representatives, avoiding public statements of remorse. His exit from the Gürzenich Orchestra followed, with reports of a six-figure payout to resolve the matter.

After a period away, Roth returned to conducting with a noticeable change in appearance—sporting a beard and a rebranded image. Yet his return did not include gestures of accountability, such as donating part of his settlement or revisiting the SWR as a guest conductor. The organisation's stance on his conduct remains unclear, particularly when compared to their past support for other controversial figures like Teodor Currentzis. Audience reactions have also shifted. Some performances saw increased disapproval, with more frequent booing from attendees. Despite his reappearance, no major orchestras or institutions have publicly engaged him as chief conductor or guest since the incident.

Roth's handling of the situation has left questions about his professional future. His avoidance of direct responsibility and lack of visible change in behaviour continue to shape public perception. Meanwhile, the absence of high-profile engagements suggests lasting consequences for his career.
