Former Romanian Prime Ministers Attend Military Parade in Beijing
Two former Romanian prime ministers, Viorica Dăncilă and Adrian Năstase, have been invited to a military parade in Beijing, marking the end of World War II. The event, organised by Chinese president Xi Jinping, saw the attendance of several world leaders, including the president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, Slovakia's PM Robert Fico, the king of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni, Vietnam president Luong Cuong, Malaysia PM Anwar Ibrahim, and the military leader of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing.
The group photo includes the Chinese president, Russian president Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. However, it's important to note that the participation of Dăncilă and Năstase in the event has not been directly mentioned in all sources.
Dăncilă, who served as prime minister from January 2018 to November 2019 and was a leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), argued that communicating with other heads of state "brings development." On the other hand, Năstase, who served as prime minister from 2000 to 2004, previously held positions as the president of the PSD, and was the president of the Parliament's Chamber of Deputies and Foreign Affairs minister, stated that he attended the event as a private person.
Foreign Affairs minister Oana Ţoiu, however, expressed that the invitation indicates an intention to show influence over Romania. She stated that Putin only managed to show that their ties are linked to the past and not to the future of Romania. Ţoiu also stated that politicians who are honored to sit in a photo next to Putin are not and cannot be representatives of Romania.
In a blog post, Năstase mentioned discussing sensitive issues of international politics, including the war in Ukraine and the relationship between China, Russia, and India, with deputy minister Sun Haiyan. Năstase is in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of China's victory over Japan and fascism in World War II.
The military parade in Beijing also included the participation of Russia, North Korea, Belarus, Iran, Indonesia, South Korea, Slovakia, Serbia, and China. Notable guests included Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, Alexander Lukashenko, Ebrahim Raisi, Joko Widodo, Woo Won-shik, Peter Pellegrini (Slovakia), and Aleksandar Vučić (Serbia).
