Foreign bank UBS establishes presence in Malaysia's Islamic stock exchange, serving as the initial foreign participant
Bursa Malaysia-i, the world's first end-to-end Shariah-compliant investing platform, has welcomed UBS Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd as its latest Islamic Participating Organisation (PO). This move marks a significant expansion in foreign stockbroking within Malaysia's Islamic capital market.
UBS Securities, currently overweight on Malaysian equities, will commence its Islamic stockbroking services on 2 September 2025. The Swiss-based financial services company maintains its top foreign broker and overall top three broker positions in Malaysia with a market share of 10%.
With UBS Securities' onboarding, the number of stockbroking firms offering Islamic stockbroking services on Bursa Malaysia-i has increased to 18. Among these, BIMB Securities Sdn Bhd remains the only full-fledged Islamic PO, while 17 offer services on a window basis.
UBS Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd is the first foreign broker to offer Islamic stockbroking services through a dedicated Islamic window on Bursa Malaysia-i. This move is part of UBS Securities' ongoing efforts to provide global access to Malaysia's capital markets while expanding its comprehensive suite of investment products for clients.
Dato' Fad'l Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia, stated that UBS Securities' onboarding marks a milestone in efforts to grow and diversify Malaysia's Islamic capital market. He expressed his confidence that this development will attract more foreign investors to participate in the Shariah-compliant securities market.
The Shariah-compliant securities market capitalisation in Malaysia has expanded 14.3% year-on-year, increasing from RM1.17 trillion in 2023 to RM1.34 trillion as at end 2024. This growth underscores the potential and attractiveness of Malaysia's Islamic capital market.
Other notable Islamic POs on Bursa Malaysia-i include Affin Hwang Investment Bank Berhad, AmInvestment Bank Berhad, CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd, CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd, Hong Leong Investment Bank Berhad, Inter-Pacific Securities Sdn Bhd, Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad, Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd, Maybank Investment Bank Berhad, MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Berhad, M&A Securities Sdn Bhd, Phillip Capital Sdn Bhd, Public Investment Bank Berhad, RHB Investment Bank Berhad, TA Securities Holdings Berhad, and UOB Kay Hian Securities (M) Sdn Bhd.
As of 2 September 2025, the first foreign broker offering Islamic Stockbroking services on Bursa Malaysia-i will be Phillip Securities Pte Ltd from Singapore. This development is expected to further boost the growth and diversity of Malaysia's Islamic capital market.
