Foreign Affairs Committees from the Baltic states advocate for Ukraine's admission into NATO
In a significant move towards strengthening support for Ukraine, the Foreign Affairs Committees of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have joined forces to pledge concrete political actions. The joint statement was made at the annual meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committees, held in Birštonas, Lithuania, on June 6, 2025.
The statement, available for download with a size of 209.76 KB, was signed by Chair Marko Mihkelson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia), Chair Ināra Mūrniece of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima of Latvia, and Chair Remigijus Motuzas of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas of Lithuania. The text of the Joint Statement is available in English, and can be read in full at the provided link: 3B-Statement-06.06.2025.pdf.
The committees aim to expand and tighten sanctions regimes against Russia, and seek to ensure full legal and political accountability for crimes committed against Ukraine. They also reaffirm their support for Ukraine's membership in the European Union, and commit to supporting Ukraine until its full victory, including the liberation of all temporarily occupied territories, accountability for war crimes, and full implementation of international justice.
In addition, the committees promise to support Ukraine's path towards NATO membership, in line with the decisions of the Bucharest, Vilnius, and Washington Summits. They believe Ukraine's NATO membership would provide a more effective and enduring framework for Euro-Atlantic security.
The Foreign Affairs Committees also call upon other national parliaments, international parliamentary assemblies, governments, and responsible institutions to endorse their statement and adopt corresponding actions for Ukraine. They commit to continuing diplomatic and political efforts to isolate Russia and its supporters in international organizations.
The committees believe that Ukraine's victory over Russia's aggression would consolidate peace in Europe and preserve the rules-based international order. They call on the upcoming 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague to take concrete political steps for Ukraine's accession to the Alliance.
This joint statement marks a significant step in the international community's efforts to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and its aspirations for EU membership and NATO accession. The committees' unified stance underscores the shared commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, rule of law, and peace in Europe and beyond.
