Football player Xavier Worthy, a key member of the Chiefs, exits a match against the Chargers following a collision with Travis Kelce, suffering a shoulder injury.
Kansas City Chiefs Suffer Blow as Xavier Worthy Sustains Shoulder Injury in Season Opener
The Kansas City Chiefs faced a setback in their 2025 season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, as wide receiver Xavier Worthy, their 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was forced to leave the game due to a shoulder injury.
Worthy, who had 59 catches for 638 yards with six touchdowns in 17 games last season, was taking part in a short route when the incident occurred during the third down of the game. He was involved in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce, causing the shoulder injury.
Upon hitting the turf, Worthy was in immediate pain and could be seen on the Chiefs' sideline hanging his right shoulder down and wincing. Trainers appeared to be pushing against his injured shoulder, with some speculating that it was dislocated. Worthy walked off the field in São Paulo with a towel over his head and never returned.
The Chiefs struggled to move the ball in the first half without Worthy, with the Chargers quickly getting off to a 10-0 lead. Harrison Butker added six points to the Chiefs' score before halftime.
The Chiefs are hoping for a quick return for Worthy for next week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, a Super Bowl LIX rematch. Worthy's role increased in the playoffs, where he led the Chiefs with 287 yards and 19 receptions over their three games. He scored three times in the playoffs, including one in the Super Bowl.
Kansas City Chiefs fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Worthy's recovery, as he was expected to be a top target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, especially with Rashee Rice serving a six-game suspension. Worthy will be coached by the Green Bay Packers' head coach during the 2025 NFL season, Matt LaFleur.
