Footage Emerges of Police Officer Admonishing Zach Edey, Basketball Player of Memphis Grizzlies
In an unexpected turn of events, Memphis Grizzlies' centre Zach Edey found himself in hot water earlier this year, following a traffic stop that occurred on May 1, 2025 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.
According to reports, Edey was driving his 2023 Kia Sorento at a speed of 101 mph in a 55-mph zone. The officer immediately pulled him over and berated him for exceeding the speed limit by nearly double.
During the traffic stop, Edey tried to explain that he had sped up to pass a car, but the officer was not receptive to his excuses. Edey handed over his license and registration without incident.
Despite the high speed, the misdemeanor reckless driving charge against Edey was later dropped. He agreed to pay a fine of $639.50.
The incident was captured on police body cam footage, but the details of the conversation between Edey and the officer have not been made public.
This speeding incident occurred days after the Grizzlies' season ended, and it didn't seem to affect Edey's performance on the court. In the 2024-2025 season with Memphis, he averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 21.5 minutes per contest.
Edey's impressive play on the court was recognised when he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. However, he placed fifth in Rookie of the Year voting, trailing Stephon Castle, Zaccharie Risacher, Jaylen Wells, and Alex Sarr.
Interestingly, there is no available information about Edey being stopped for allegedly driving over 100 mph or any penalties he received for speeding in 2025 or any subsequent years.
It's worth noting that Edey had a strong showing in various statistical categories during the 2024-2025 season. According to Basketball Reference, he finished 17th in rebounds per game, 8th in offensive rebounds, 6th in offensive boards per game, and 20th in blocks.
Despite this speeding incident, Edey continues to be a valuable asset to the Memphis Grizzlies. The team, however, lost in five games to the Oklahoma City Thunder during the first round of the playoffs.
As Edey continues to grow and develop as a player, fans will be eagerly watching to see how he bounces back from this speeding incident and contributes to the Grizzlies' success in the future.
