Followingthe construction train accident: Access to S3 and S5 has been limited.
On Friday afternoon, a train accident occurred at Hamburg Central Station, causing significant disruptions to S-Bahn services. The incident involved the Ernst-Merck Bridge and a construction train operated by the Hamburg Port Authority.
At 4 PM, the construction train collided with the superstructure of the Ernst-Merck Bridge, becoming lodged and halting its progress. As a result, the S3 was only able to run as far as Hammerbrook, and the S5 was not running between Neugraben and Stade.
Four trains were evacuated near the main station, and three more further along the route. A total of 1,580 people were evacuated from eight trains. The operation to evacuate passengers lasted until just before 10 PM.
The Federal Police, fire services, and Deutsche Bahn worked together to carry out the evacuations, ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the accident.
Due to the accident, train services were suspended, and S-Bahn services were disrupted between Harburg and Hamburg. Despite initial plans to resume services on Saturday evening, the track remained closed for cleanup and ongoing evacuation operations.
The responsible company for the construction train that collided with the Ernst-Merck-Viadukt has not yet been identified, but the Hamburg Port Authority is believed to be involved.
The accident at Hamburg Central Station on Friday disrupted the usual flow of S-Bahn services, but the track was finally reopened for services on Saturday evening. Passengers are advised to check the latest updates and plan their journeys accordingly.
