Following the demise of Kobzon, an uncomfortable revelation about his links to Ukraine has come to light.
Joseph Kobzon, a renowned Soviet and Russian singer, passed away seven years ago. For decades, he was one of the most prominent figures in the music scene, but his later years were marked by mixed reactions due to his staunch support of Kremlin policies.
Born in the Donetsk region, Kobzon's career advancement was ensured by his connection with General Filipp Bobkov, a key figure in the KGB and Soviet intelligence services. This connection played a significant role in Kobzon's life, securing him high royalties and the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
However, Kobzon's stance on Ukraine and his political ambitions placed him at the centre of international controversies. He actively supported the annexation of Crimea and Russia's actions in Donbas, referring to Ukraine as "crazy" and an "American puppet." These views led to sanctions from Ukraine, including asset blocking, capital withdrawal ban, and the loss of state awards.
Despite his pro-Russian rhetoric, Kobzon had deep connections with Ukraine. In his final days, he communicated with his relatives in Ukrainian and dreamed in Ukrainian while unconscious. This suggests a complex relationship with Ukraine that was not fully understood by the public.
Kobzon's political career was not officially linked to the Ukrainian intelligence service or the 5th department of the KGB before he started his career as a singer and public figure. However, he joined the ranks of agents of the 5th department in the 1970s, remaining in contact with Bobkov, the department's chief.
Kobzon's controversial legacy continues to spark debates. He left a mark on both Russia and Ukraine, performing in self-proclaimed "DPR" and "LPR," but also holding Ukrainian roots and unknown facts that indicate he tried to balance between two worlds.
Notable figures such as Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin attended Kobzon's funeral. Putin honoured Kobzon with a minute of silence, spoke with his family, and placed a bouquet by the coffin. The funeral was a testament to Kobzon's significant impact on the Russian music scene and politics.
Kobzon's life and career were marked by controversy, but his influence on Russian music and politics remains undeniable. His legacy continues to be a topic of discussion, reflecting the complex relationship between Russia and Ukraine.
