Focuses on a Decade-Long Neighborhood Development Endeavor

The Sark Tapestry, a remarkable collaborative work created by Sark residents and tourists, is now on public display at the Sark Art Gallery and Museum on The Avenue. The intricate tapestry, which took ten years to complete, is a testament to the goodwill and dedication of the community.

The project began in 2015, with the initial idea coming from two visiting tapestry weavers, Diana Scarth and LouLou Morris. Diana Scarth created the original drawing for the tapestry, but unfortunately, she passed away before its completion. Her husband, however, continued to contribute to the project.

The Sark Tapestry required financial support, but it has been self-funding through donations and financial support from various sources. Key supporters include the Seigneur, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Reverend David Stolton, a key figure behind the creation of the Sark Art Gallery and Museum.

Workshops were held in the summer to teach people how to tapestry weave for the Sark Tapestry. Experienced tapestry weaver Hilary Charlesworth ran lessons for those working on the project. One lady admitted to only putting a few stitches in the tapestry, but the collective effort resulted in a stunning piece of art.

LouLou Morris provided the printed design for the tapestry, which depicts various aspects of Sark's history and culture. The Sark Tapestry is now on display in the Sark Art Gallery and Museum, offering visitors a chance to appreciate this unique collaborative work.

The Art Gallery and Museum is ordinarily open for free every day between 10:00 and 16:00. The launch party for the Sark Tapestry was attended by people who had placed stitches in the tapestry, making it a truly community-driven event. Despite Diana Scarth's untimely death before the launch event, her vision and creativity live on in this beautiful tapestry.

The Sark Tapestry is a testament to the power of community spirit and the love for one's home. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and culture of Sark, and a source of pride for all those who contributed to its creation.
