Flotilla Coordinator from Global Sumud Announces Attempt to Establish Humanitarian Passageway for Gaza Prior to Departure
A flotilla of boats, including the "Thousand Madleens" initiative, is preparing to set sail from various European ports to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinian shores and challenge the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza. The flotilla, which will depart from Marseille on Sunday afternoon, is part of a larger movement known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, with boats also setting sail from Barcelona on August 31 and several other European ports on September 4.
The "Thousand Madleens" initiative, like the Global Sumud Flotilla, aims to establish a humanitarian corridor and break the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza. The flotilla has received an overwhelming response, with over 32,000 registration requests for the humanitarian journey. Two-thirds of these requests are for individuals who want to participate on the boats.
The boats from Tunisia will join the Thousand Madleens initiative, adding to the growing number of vessels challenging the Israeli blockade. However, the organizers of the Thousand Madleens initiative departing from Marseille remain unnamed in the current search results.
The Madleen boat, seized by the Israeli navy on June 9, is part of the "Thousand Madleens" initiative. Another boat named Handala was arrested by the Israeli army on July 26. The Israeli navy and army have previously arrested boats attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The flotilla acknowledges the potential reaction of Israel but is there to fulfill a citizen's duty and to fill the gap left by Western governments. Greta Thunberg, the renowned climate activist, is among the participants on the flotilla. The flotilla's goal is not to feed the population of Gaza, as declared by Samuel Crettenand, the Swiss activist and coordinator of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Upon reaching Gaza, the flotilla hopes that cargo ships will follow to unload tons of food once the humanitarian corridor is established. Samuel Crettenand expressed hope that this mobilization is "just the beginning". The flotilla is headed towards Gaza, aiming to make a difference and challenge the ongoing blockade.
