Florida's Seminole Tribe is in mourning following the demise of their General Counsel, Jim Shore.
Jim Shore: A Pioneer in Indian Gaming and Seminole Tribe Law
Jim Shore, a native Floridian, spent his formative years living off the grid with his family in the woods, residing in traditional Seminole chickees and raising cattle. Born on February 16, 1945, Shore was one of six children, having two brothers and four sisters.
Shore's life took a significant turn when he graduated from Okeechobee High School in 1963. He went on to further his education, earning a bachelor's degree in history from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, in 1977. His academic journey culminated in 1980, when he graduated from Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg.
In 1981, Shore joined the Seminole Tribe of Florida as deputy general counsel, a role that would shape his career and the future of the Tribe. Under his guidance, the Seminole Classic Casino in Hollywood introduced "Unlimited Bingo" in 1979, a move that paved the way for the expansion of Indian gaming by other Tribes across the country.
Shore's tenure as General Counsel of the Seminole Tribe of Florida was marked by his instrumental role in the Tribe's success. For over 40 years, he oversaw the Tribe's legal matters, playing a crucial part in their growth and development. However, his successor as General Counsel was not publicly disclosed upon his recent passing.
Today, Indian Gaming operations deliver half of the total gaming revenue across the United States, a testament to the far-reaching impact of Shore's work. His legacy continues to influence the Tribe and the gaming industry as a whole.
Rest in peace, Jim Shore, a pioneer in Indian gaming and a dedicated servant of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
