Florida Arcade Workers Facing Charges in Illicit Gambling Probe

Recently, two individuals were taken into custody in Port Charlotte, Florida. This occurred due to investigators discovering that illegal gambling activities were being carried out in the area, specifically involving slot machines.

On the 23rd of this month, law enforcement agents assigned to the Narcotics Unit of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) visited a venue called "Arcade Headquarters." They found evidence of illegal gambling occurring in this location. The employees at the Arcade were informed that they would be facing charges related to being associated with an illegal gambling establishment.

Shortly after this incident, the other casinos in the city began notifying their patrons to leave and quickly shut down their operations. The officials believed that the workers at these casinos were monitoring for any signs of approaching law enforcement.

Later that same day, officers traveled to "Showtime Casino" in Port Charlotte. Previously, there had been accusations of illegal gambling taking place in this location. Employees there were seen alternating between standing outside and looking out for any signs of law enforcement while locking the doors for all incoming and outgoing customers. This behavior aroused the suspicions of the investigators, who noticed illegal gambling occurring on the slot machines.

When the patrons were alerted to the fact that they were involved in illegal activities, they were urged to leave immediately. The suspects running the business, Mevin Rodriguez, aged 28, and Amey M. Naik, 31, were charged with being linked to an unlawful gambling enterprise.

Before this, the managers of these establishments had been repeatedly given warnings from both the CCSO and the Florida Gaming Commission about the laws governing their businesses. The CCSO and the FGC both cautioned them to cease their operations, regardless of whether they chose to call themselves casinos or arcades.

In the past year, the CCSO launched an operation against two suspected illegal businesses, seizing approximately 200 gambling devices. However, these establishments continued to operate illegally, which resulted in an armed robbery at one of them last week.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell emphasized that the operators of these businesses have received numerous warnings. He stated, "They simply don't care. We send warnings, they close for a few days, and then they reopen." The sheriff also stated that both patrons and business operators could face charges if they were found participating in illegal activities.

It was also mentioned that, as of July in Florida, the charge against the employees would escalate from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony, potentially resulting in harsher penalties. Sheriff Prummell cautioned citizens against entering these illegal gaming venues, assuring them that law enforcement would continue to work against these casinos within Charlotte County.
