Floods in Pakistan - Two Million People Affected by the Torrential Rainfalls

In the heart of Pakistan, the Punjab province has been hit by one of the worst flood disasters in its recent history. According to the disaster management authority, over two million people have been affected by the catastrophic flooding.

The spokesperson for the Punjab's disaster management authority, Mazhar Chaduhary, reported that more than 2,000 villages are submerged due to rising water levels in the Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers. The heavy rainfall expected in the next 24 hours could exacerbate the situation. Flood warnings have been issued for affected areas in Punjab and the southern province of Sindh.

The flooding has claimed at least 33 lives in Punjab province in the past week, and nationwide, over 840 people have died since the start of the rainy season at the end of June. Over 760,000 people have been evacuated due to the flooding in Punjab province.

Amidst this crisis, several aid organisations have stepped forward to support the victims. Caritas Pakistan is providing food, drinking water, medical first aid, and distributing tents and construction materials for shelters. The Welthungerhilfe warns about the expanding flood crisis and supports affected communities with emergency relief and sustainability efforts. Kindernothilfe has allocated 100,000 euros for immediate aid targeting children and families in the flood-affected areas, working with local partners.

As weather forecasts predict a longer and stronger monsoon season, the challenge to contain and mitigate the flood's impact remains significant. The international community is urged to provide aid and support to the people of Pakistan during this critical time.
