Firefox for 32-bit Linux Operations to Cease by Mozilla
Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, has announced that it will discontinue support for 32-bit Linux systems by 2026. This decision comes after the current Debian 13 has discontinued support for 32-bit Linux, making maintaining Firefox for these systems difficult and unreliable.
The final Extended Support Release (ESR) for 32-bit Linux will be Firefox ESR 140, which Mozilla has announced will provide security updates until at least September 2026. Firefox 144, expected on October 14, 2025, will be the last version to support 32-bit Linux. After this, there will be no 32-bit version of Firefox for Linux.
Users currently using Firefox on a 32-bit Linux system are encouraged to switch to a 64-bit operating system. This change primarily affects smaller Linux distributions based on Debian 12 or older, as well as the current Debian 13. Notable among these is MX Linux, which still offers both 32- and 64-bit versions and is based on Debian Stable (currently Debian 12 or older).
Firefox ESR 140 is intended to provide a transition period for users who cannot immediately switch to a 64-bit operating system. The 64-bit version of Firefox will continue to be supported and updated. It's important to note that after 2026, Firefox users on 32-bit Linux systems will no longer receive updates or support.
This decision by Mozilla follows Google's lead, as Google discontinued support for Chrome on i386 systems in March 2016. However, the discontinuation of Firefox support for 32-bit Linux happens relatively late compared to Google's decision.
In conclusion, Firefox users on 32-bit Linux systems should prepare for the transition to a 64-bit operating system. Firefox ESR 140 will provide a temporary solution for those who cannot immediately switch, but regular support and updates will cease after 2026.
