German Forest Fire Fighting Unit Contains La Baña Wildfire in Spain

The German Forest Fire Fighting Unit has been actively engaged in battling a wildfire in the Spanish region of Puebla de Sanabria/La Baña since Saturday. The team, which includes an immediate medical emergency team, moved towards a potential deployment area around the village of La Baña on Saturday, but no action was required.

On Sunday, several individual fires combined to form a kilometer-long flame front that threatened the village. However, the team successfully defended La Baña against the flames at three fire fronts. The fire was prevented from jumping over an important road due to the efforts of the team and the creation of a 1,500-meter safety strip by bulldozers.

Support came from air-based fire-fighting aircraft and helicopters, which reduced flames over 50 meters in height and extinguished inaccessible areas. Mop-up operations were necessary to extinguish hotspots and prevent further flare-ups after the initial firefighting efforts.

Tanker trucks and deployment forces received deployment orders and were active in both shifts on Sunday. The Base of Operations was set up in a school camp in Puebla de Sanabria.

The immediate medical emergency team of the German Forest Fire Fighting Unit provided initial care to a collapsed passerby at the edge of the deployment area. However, further medical care for the individual was taken over by the Spanish rescue forces. The incident does not seem to have directly affected the ongoing firefighting efforts in La Baña.

The leader of the fire brigade team from Bonn during the operation is not publicly available. The Fire and Rescue Service Bonn can be contacted at the Press Office, with Frank Frenser as the point of contact. The contact details for the Fire and Rescue Service Bonn Press Office are: +49 228 - 71 70** and www.bonn.de/feuerwehr.

Fire fighting operations in La Baña, including mop-up operations, continue as previously mentioned. The German Forest Fire Module's deployment in Castilla-León, Spain is expected to end by the beginning of the following week. Upon completion of the deployment, the unit will embark on a return journey to Germany.
