Fire in Recklinghausen-South: Waste Collection Vehicle Blaze Extinguished

A significant incident took place on July 30, 2025, in Recklinghausen-South, where a fire broke out inside a waste collection vehicle.

The fire department in Recklinghausen was alerted to the incident at 14:50, and a swift response was initiated. The fire and rescue station's full-time duty crew, the incident command, the voluntary South unit, the rescue service with an RTW, and the Gladbeck fire department with two vehicles were all involved in the operation.

Simultaneously, there were two other smaller incidents, an area fire on the A2 and a triggered fire alarm system, which were handled without any special features.

Upon arrival, the incident commander assessed the situation and considered various options for emptying the vehicle to extinguish deeper-seated hotspots within the load. However, the mixed waste burning inside the vehicle proved challenging to effectively extinguish by opening and emptying it.

To gain access to the load, the rear door of the waste vehicle was forced open using a crane grab, secured, and the load was removed manually. The Gladbeck fire department's cutting extinguishing system was not deployed in this operation.

The extinguished load was then reloaded into containers by a wheel loader and a mini excavator. Initially, the vehicle was cooled by the fire department, and later, it was extinguished from above the load using foam via a turntable ladder.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, and the operation lasted from 14:50 to 20:45. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are currently being investigated by the police.

The voluntary fire brigade Hochlar staffed the vacant fire and rescue station on Kurt-Schumacher-Allee during this incident.
