Fire crews from Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen en route to fight forest fires in Spain.
On Sunday, a series of individual fires merged into a kilometer-long flame front in the village of La Baña, Castilla-León, Spain. The blaze prompted the dispatch of the German Forest Fire Deployment Team to the potential deployment area around La Baña, as reported by Fire and Rescue Service Bonn via news aktuell.
The German team, led by a German fire officer integrated into a local command that includes Spanish authorities and forestry services, arrived in Spain on August 24, 2025. The team was active in both shifts, working tirelessly to defend La Baña from the encroaching wildfire.
Air support was provided with up to six fire-fighting aircraft and ten fire-fighting helicopters. The deployment teams, with massive hose reel deployment, were able to prevent the fire from advancing beyond a safety line created by bulldozers, nearly 1.5 kilometers in length.
As the fire spread towards the village, immediate deployment orders were issued for tank fire-fighting vehicles. The initial medical emergency team, part of the unit for self-protection during deployment measures, took over initial care for a pedestrian who collapsed at the edge of the deployment area. The Spanish rescue forces later took over further medical care for the pedestrian.
Extensive follow-up operations with water and hand tools were necessary to extinguish hotspots and prevent further flare-ups. The German deployment is scheduled to end at the beginning of the following week, after which the team will return to Germany.
