Financial Statement of the Berlin Federal Police Directorate as of the New Year's Beginning
The Federal Police Directorate Berlin had a busy New Year's Eve, deploying 650 personnel to monitor the arrival and departure of event participants at main focus areas such as Alexanderplatz, Gesundbrunnen, Hauptbahnhof, Warschauer Straße, and Ostkreuz.
During the course of the night, multiple incidents of pyrotechnics being thrown at groups of people occurred at the Alexanderplatz station. Two cases of pyrotechnics being thrown at uniformed officers were also reported. In one such incident, a plainclothes officer was injured by a 15-year-old Russian national. The motive behind the attack is currently under investigation.
In total, officers found 16 violations of the Weapons Act and 18 violations of the Explosives Act. They confiscated 11 blank-firing weapons, ammunition, unmarked pyrotechnics, and multiple knives. The Federal Police initiated 95 criminal proceedings, including 42 for acts of violence.
One of the most notable incidents took place in Berlin-Hellersdorf, where a 62-year-old man was questioned by the Federal Police for throwing fireworks at an uninvolved officer, causing the officer minor injuries. The man also threw fireworks from his window at children, leading to police investigation and temporary detention of the intoxicated suspect.
Despite these incidents, none of the officers were injured in the incidents at the Alexanderplatz station, except for the plainclothes officer who was injured by the 15-year-old Russian national.
