In a thrilling match in Rotorua, New Zealand, on Saturday, Fiji defeated Samoa with a final score of 29-15, securing their place in the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The victory also confirmed Tonga's qualification before the halftime of the Pacific Nations Cup match between Fiji and Samoa began.

The match started slowly for Fiji, who conceded an early try to Samoa. However, they soon found their rhythm, with hooker Tevita Ikanivere scoring the opening try for Fiji in the 13th minute. The score remained 5-3 in favour of Fiji until the second half.

In the 60th minute, Simione Kuruvoli scored a try for Fiji, giving them the lead for the first time. Seta Tamanivalu followed suit just before the break, making the score 15-3. Fiji extended their lead with a penalty and a last-minute try to Kalaveti Ravouvou, ensuring a comfortable victory.

Samoa managed to score through hooker Pita Anae-Ah Sue and scumhalf Joel Lam, but it was not enough to prevent Fiji from claiming the win. Samoa will now play in a fifth- and sixth-place playoff next weekend.

With Fiji and Japan already qualified, the next three teams in the Pacific tournament will secure their spots for the World Cup. Tonga's advancement to the semifinals guarantees them a place at the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

Meanwhile, the United States needs to win with a bonus point to avoid the playoff for fifth place. Japan will play the United States in Sacramento, California, later this weekend. The final and third-place playoff will be held in Salt Lake City on Sept. 20.

As Fiji finishes atop Pool A in the Pacific Nations Cup, they will undoubtedly be a force to reckon with in the upcoming World Cup. Their resilience and determination were evident in their match against Samoa, and they will undoubtedly continue to impress in the tournament.
