Fighter jets of type F-16 touch down in Romania, in accordance with the defense agreement with Norway.
Romania Receives More F-16 Fighting Falcon Jets from Norway
In a significant move for the Romanian Air Force, three additional F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft have been received from Norway, as announced by the Ministry of Defense (MApN) on August 28. The jets landed at the 86th Air Base in Borcea.
The Romanian and Norwegian governments signed a contract for the purchase of 32 F-16s, with this latest delivery marking a significant step towards completing the full fleet. So far, 21 aircraft have been delivered.
The Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, and the Norwegian Minister of Defence, Bjørn Arild Gram, were present for the handover ceremony.
Sixteen of the delivered aircraft are already in service with the 48th Fighter Squadron at Câmpia Turzii. Five of the delivered aircraft are allocated to the 571st Fighter Squadron, part of the 57th Air Base "Captain Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino" at Mihail Kogălniceanu. Interestingly, the aircraft currently assigned to the 571st Fighter Squadron at Mihail Kogălniceanu have not been previously mentioned.
The contract includes an initial logistics package and complementary goods and services provided by the United States government. However, no new details about the cost or financing of the aircraft were provided.
The aircraft join those already in service with the Romanian Air Force and are expected to strengthen the country's air defense capabilities. The remaining service life of the aircraft is at least ten years, and they will serve the Romanian Air Force until Romania transitions to fifth-generation fighter jets.
It's important to note that no new information about the allocation of the aircraft or the delivery status of the remaining aircraft was provided in this announcement. The contract for the purchase of 32 F-16s also includes logistics and services provided by the United States government, but no new details about this were provided either.
The arrival of these F-16 Fighting Falcon jets marks a significant milestone in Romania's military modernization efforts and underscores the strong partnership between Romania and Norway.
