Festival debacle leads to consumer watchdog receiving nine complaints in Hong Kong

The AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest Hong Kong, currently underway in the city, has faced a setback as the organiser, Event Architects Ltd., has suspended the tethered rides attraction due to a permit issue. This decision has caused disappointment among some consumers and sparked concern from the Consumer Council.

The Consumer Council has expressed its worry about the incident that led to the complaints and the subsequent suspension of the tethered rides. At least nine complaints have been received by the Council regarding the festival, with a total sum of HK$16,933 (US$2,170).

One complaint involved an amount of HK$4,956. The organiser apologised for the inconvenience earlier on Thursday evening, following the suspension of the attraction the day before. As a result of the permit issue, the organiser offered an additional visit to the carnival for those who bought entrance tickets.

The hot-air balloon festival has had to deflate all its balloons due to the scorching weather. According to the city's forecaster, temperatures in Hong Kong could rise to as high as 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) during the day.

The Consumer Council is following up on the matter with the organiser, seeking clarification and resolution to the issues raised by the complaints. The complaints were related to issues with ticketing and event management, in addition to the permit issue for the tethered ride.

A broadcast announcement was made at the Central Harbourfront carnival regarding the deflation of the balloons. The festival is currently ongoing in Hong Kong, and visitors are encouraged to check the latest updates and information before planning their visit.

Despite the challenges faced, the AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest Hong Kong continues to draw crowds, offering a unique and captivating spectacle for visitors. The organisers remain committed to addressing the concerns raised by the Consumer Council and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
