Female representatives from Lower Saxony's regional divisions congregate in Zeven for a meeting
The Rotenburg (Wümme) district, one of the largest in Lower Saxony, recently hosted a gathering at the Zeven fire station on International Women's Day. The event, organised by the Rotenburg (Wümme) District Fire Department, saw the participation of various workshops in different districts, including services for technical assistance and self-defense for women only.
Peter Dettmer, the district fire chief of Rotenburg (Wümme), provided an overview of the district's activities. The gathering also saw the attendance of Sabine Schröder, the state women's representative of the Lower Saxony Fire Department Association, and Tanja de Freese, the deputy state women's representative.
Schröder and her deputy shared news from the Lower Saxony Fire Department Association. They revealed that new ranks, including for the youth fire departments, will be introduced. Additionally, a new fire regulation in Lower Saxony is expected to be published soon, including a new fire uniform for both male and female firefighters. The uniforms will be designed to ensure that they look the same for all firefighters, regardless of gender.
However, what is still missing is suitable protective clothing for female firefighters. The Lower Saxony Fire Department Association, in collaboration with public insurers and the fire department accident insurance, is working to address this issue. They have created an aid offer for sexual discrimination, violence, and harassment in the fire department, and are drafting a law for the Ministry of the Interior for psychosocial emergency care.
In a bid to further support women in fire departments, Schröder plans to organize a nationwide forum for fire department women in East Frisia. The forum, scheduled to take place from October 10 to 12, 2025, will be part of the "Firefighters in Motion" event in Winsen in the Harburg district in 2025, organised by the Lower Saxony Fire Department Association.
Jutta Blatzheim-Roegler, the woman who plans to organize the nationwide forum for women in fire brigades in 2025, aims to develop guidelines for leaders in the fire department regarding "Pregnancy in the Fire Department."

A standardized leaflet from the fire department accident insurance on this topic is also available.
