In a bizarre turn of events, a shoplifting incident at the Hamm Main Train Station on the 23rd of August took an unexpected turn, leading to a dramatic chase that ended at the Datteln-Hamme canal.

The incident, which occurred during a routine deployment by the Federal Police on a Saturday morning, involved a 24-year-old Moroccan from Möhnesee. The shoplifter, who was not identified, made a daring escape, stripping down to his underwear before jumping into the canal.

The abandoned backpack containing stolen goods worth around 100 euros and a small amount of cocaine was found near the water's edge. The authorities, including the Federal Police, Hamm Police, and the Fire Department, joined forces to apprehend the shoplifter and ensure his safety.

The chase led to the 'Death Bridge', where the shoplifter refused to come ashore. It took nearly 40 minutes for the shoplifter to accept a rope offered by the Fire Department to get back on land. The shoplifter was subsequently hospitalized due to symptoms of hypothermia.

The police have since initiated criminal proceedings against the Moroccan for theft and drug possession. The allegations of drug possession are believed to be related to the incident on August 23, 2020.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and the diligence of our law enforcement agencies in maintaining order and ensuring the well-being of our community.
