Minister Wants Billions for Job Seekers' Health and Long-Term Care Insurance
The New Health Minister's Plan to Avert Health Insurance Contribution Increases
Federal Health Minister Seeks $1 Billion Financing from the National Government
Nina Warken, the freshly appointed CDU health minister, is pushing for an emergency package to stave off hikes in health insurance contributions. She said, "We aim to construct a comprehensive package to keep contribution increases to a minimum. Or hell, better yet, eliminate them entirely!" The health insurance sector is currently in a dire predicament, according to Warken. While the coalition agreementβs Commission for Sustainable Financing of Health Insurance should now be established, Warken opines, "We can't afford to twiddle our thumbs until 2027, when the commission's findings are finally presented."
Job Seekers' Health Insurance Strain and Potential Subsidies
Warken shed light on the insufficient federal contributions towards paying job seekersβ health insurance premiums. "The payments from job centers donβt come close to covering their health care expenses. Somethingβs haywire here, and weβll sort it out," she pledged. Health insurance providers claim that the Federal Government would need to cough up an additional 10 billion euros to genuinely cover job seekersβ health care expenses.
Long-Term Care Insurance Debt and Demands for Compensation
Besides advocating for the job seekers' health insurance, Warken also called for the Federal Government to settle the missing billion-euro contribution to stabilize the long-term care insurance, which currently teeters on the brink of financial disaster. "The Federal Government owes the long-term care insurance over five billion euros for expenses incurred during the pandemic, such as tests and the care protection shield, which prevented many facilities from shutting down," she explained. She underscored the need for swift action to address the current financial crisis in long-term care insurance:
"Don't go holdin' back when it comes to short-term measures to salvage long-term care financing, ladies and gents!" Warken exclaimed, alluding to the coalition agreement that lacks funding from the Federal Budget for long-term care insurance. "We're after a total solution here, a comprehensive packageβnot just a one-off demand," she emphasized. Experts predict a deficit of up to 5.8 billion euros in the long-term care insurance this year.
The Work Ahead for Minister Warken
Proposed demands for a billion in Federal Government subsidies for job seekers' health insurance and long-term care insurance were earlier floated by the health working group during Union-SPD coalition negotiations but were eventually removed in the final version.
