Federal Financial Aid Changes for 2026-27 Academic Year: Essential Information for Students on FAFSA Updates
The Department of Education in the United States has announced an early release of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2026-27 academic year. This marks a significant shift from the previous January 1 deadline, as the FAFSA Deadline Act, signed into law by former President Joe Biden on Dec. 11, 2024, requires the department to launch the form by Oct. 1 each year.
The rollout plan for the 2026-27 FAFSA, revealed on June 23, consists of three phases. The first phase, Beta 1, began on August 4, 2025, with a limited group of school districts participating. A second beta phase, Beta 2, is scheduled for late August or early September 2025, which will be broader, allowing individual students and parents to participate. The full launch is set for October 1, 2025.
The beta version of the FAFSA, made available in August, has already seen over 1,000 students submit a form during the first four weeks of testing. Thousands more students are expected to complete the beta FAFSA by October.
This year's FAFSA promises a streamlined process for inviting contributors to the form. For the first time in three years, students will be able to invite contributors immediately, making the application process more accessible and efficient.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed recently, has prompted the Federal Student Aid (FSA) to request an "emergency" processing and approval of revisions to the 2026-27 FAFSA. The bill made changes to what is considered an "asset" under the financial aid formula, necessitating these revisions.
The 2026-27 FAFSA will also include two significant updates: immediate account verification for users with a Social Security number and a simplified process for students to invite contributors.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon has alerted Congress that the 2026-27 FAFSA will be available by the set Oct. 1 deadline. The Trump administration has invested in technical competence and expertise to ensure the FAFSA form is working properly.
Current and prospective college students can request access to the beta FAFSA form until October. The department encourages students to take advantage of this opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new process and submit their applications early.
The current Secretary of Education, responsible for the rollout of the 2026-27 FAFSA, is Miguel Cardona. The department has posted the request in the Federal Register on July 29, asking the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to approve the request no later than Aug. 3, 2025.
This early release of the FAFSA is expected to benefit thousands of students, providing them with a head start in securing financial aid for their college education.
