Federal authorities are set to release revised nutritional recommendations. A look at the anticipated updates.

The upcoming release of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines by the U.S. federal government is causing a stir, with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. voicing his criticism of the current guidelines and expressing hope for a shift towards a more health-focused approach.

Kennedy has criticized the current guidelines, blaming them for high rates of obesity and diet-related diseases in the U.S. He has stated that the forthcoming guidelines will be brief, easy to read, and will emphasize whole foods, healthy foods, and local foods.

The 2025 dietary guidelines are developed by a committee of leading experts in nutrition through an extensive review of data. The specific changes to the guidelines are yet to be seen, but they may include a potential emphasis on beef tallow, whole-fat dairy, and a less restrictive approach to ultra-processed food.

Deanna Hoelscher, a member of the 2025 dietary guidelines committee, has stated that the relationship between consumption of ultra-processed foods and health outcomes is limited. However, she also mentioned that scientists are still figuring out exactly how to define ultra-processed food. High-quality evidence on the effects of ultra-processed food is currently limited.

The committee offers recommendations, but the final guidelines are ultimately up to the Department of Agriculture and HHS. In 2020, the Trump administration did not heed all of the advice on dietary guidelines, such as on added sugar and alcohol, according to Barbara Schneeman, the chair of the 2020 dietary guidelines committee.

Schneeman stated that the guidelines are used in federal government policy, by educators, and by health professionals. She also mentioned that undercutting the guidelines could have major implications for many programs. Her hope is that there will be awareness of what the advisory committee did so that people can judge for themselves if the guidelines are changed.

It is expected that the 2025 dietary guidelines will be different from the current ones, but the exact nature of these changes remains to be seen. The final release of the guidelines is expected in a few weeks, and it remains to be seen whether they will follow the recommendations of the advisory committee or deviate from them, as was the case with the 2020 guidelines under the Trump administration.

Most Americans currently do not follow the dietary guidelines, according to Will Stone, NPR's health correspondent. The food pyramid, which Kennedy mentioned, was retired more than 10 years ago and did not mention specific products like Froot Loops.

The name of the steering group that prepared the 2025 edition of the German government's nutrition recommendations is the "Leitgruppe Ernรคhrung." The federal government is set to release the 2025 dietary guidelines by the end of September, and the debate surrounding them continues to grow. Kennedy's call for a shift towards a more health-focused dietary approach has sparked conversations about the role of government in shaping dietary guidelines and the impact these guidelines have on public health.
