FC Kaiserslautern anticipates a hefty penalty for the disruptive actions of their fans during the DFB Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen. Thomas Hengen, the club's managing director, shared his thoughts after their 1-0 loss against the Bundesliga champs in Berlin on Saturday night, "[If] a match requires interruption, the fine will be higher. I hope it won't be extremely high."
During the game with over 74,322 spectators in the sold-out Olympiastadion, the referee, Bastian Dankert, paused the game temporarily after the interval, as a dense fog of smoke filled the stadium. Fans from the underdog team, FC Kaiserslautern, showcased a choreography before kick-off - a large Red Devil almost skimmed the ceiling. But during the match, they burned prohibited pyrotechnics regularly, and later detonated fireworks. The Leverkusen section also saw fireworks ignited.
Hengen, the Lauter players, and Friedhelm Funkel lauded their fans' support, but when questioned about the mischief of FCK supporters, Funkel said, "That's just never good. It should be better dealt with between the club and the fans, ensuring it doesn't occur as often in the future."
Hengen didn't berate the German Football Association (DFB) for the checks, saying, "We're familiar with it from our own experience. It's incredibly challenging. Illegal methods are always found." However, Hengen emphasized that professional soccer must find a solution: "Each year there are an increasing number of incidents. I don't think it can continue like this." Last season, the DFB Disziplinarkammer sanctioned multiple teams every week for banned pyrotechnics in 1st and 2nd league games.
