Fast Charging Facilities to be Constructed by 5 Companies in Switzerland Through Contracts
The International Mobility Portal Summit is underway today, bringing together various stakeholders to discuss and advance mobility solutions. Simultaneously, the Electromobility Roadmap 2025, an initiative of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK), is focusing on developing electromobility in Switzerland.
The Electromobility Roadmap 2025 engages stakeholders from business, public authorities, associations, and academia, and it aims to promote electromobility in Switzerland. The roadmap has set three goals to be achieved by the end of 2025: increasing the share of plug-in vehicles to 50% of new registrations, expanding the charging network to 20,000 publicly accessible charging stations, and facilitating user-friendly and grid-friendly charging.
Meanwhile, the Federal Office for Roads (ASTRA) is supporting private initiatives to expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) in Switzerland. ASTRA launched a project call on 12 February 2024 to make additional areas along national roads available for the establishment of fast charging hubs. As a result, five companies have been awarded contracts to establish fast charging hubs along national roads in Switzerland.
The five lots, each comprising eleven parcels distributed across Switzerland, have been allocated to the highest-rated companies: Fastned Switzerland AG, Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging Europe GmbH, Atlante Italia S.r.l., Electra Charging Switzerland AG, and GOFAST AG. The companies have three years to plan the fast charging hubs and apply for building permits.
The Electromobility Roadmap 2025 also emphasises the need for expanding charging options in specific situations, such as multi-family buildings, neighborhoods, and points of interest. It does not, however, provide details on the companies responsible for the planning, financing, construction, electricity connection, operation, and maintenance of the fast charging hubs.
The development of a dense network of fast charging stations is currently being pursued along rest areas on national roads. This network is expected to significantly improve the accessibility and convenience of electric vehicle travel in Switzerland. The International Mobility Portal Summit and the Electromobility Roadmap 2025 are significant steps towards a more sustainable and electrified future for mobility in Switzerland.
