Fashion Mogul Giorgio Armani Passes Away, Marking Half a Century of Crafting Influential Power Suits
In the heart of Milan, a city that has been shaped by his vision, Giorgio Armani, the self-made industrialist who reigned over the Milanese fashion world for five decades, has passed away.
Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Armani went on to define a city's look and reshape the modern suit. His command of Milanese style earned him the nickname "Re Giorgio," or "King Giorgio."
Armani's impact on the fashion industry is enduring. In the 1980s, his stripped-down, softly structured tailoring redefined the working wardrobe for men and women, making him a household name not only in Italy but also in the United States, thanks to his early ties to Hollywood.
The global enterprise built by Armani reaches far beyond the runway. It extends into fragrance, beauty, interiors, hospitality, and dining. This multibillion-dollar empire is a testament to his vision and influence.
Armani's funeral will be held privately, in accordance with his wishes. However, a funeral chamber will be set up at Via Bergognone 59, inside the Armani/Teatro, Milan, from Saturday to Sunday, open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
As Armani recovers at home, his longtime companion Leo Dell’Orco, head of menswear design, will take the final bow at the Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani menswear spring 2026 shows.
In the days to come, the future leadership of the Armani company will involve a gradual transition to close associates, especially Dell’Orco, as well as family members including Armani's nieces Roberta and Silvana, his sister Rosanna, and her son Andrea. Though no final formal successor has been named yet, Armani's employees and family have stated that they feel like part of a family and will commit to protecting and carrying forward what he built in his memory.
Giorgio Armani, an influential Italian fashion designer, leaves behind a legacy that has reshaped the fashion landscape and will continue to inspire for generations to come. His silhouette remains unmistakable, a testament to his lasting impact on the world of fashion.
