In the ongoing pursuit of a cleaner and more sustainable future, the mobility sector is gradually incorporating hydrogen as an energy vector. Two prominent players in this shift are Hyundai-Kia Motor Company (HMC) and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), who have jointly developed a groundbreaking two-liter hydrogen direct injection engine.

The engine, which runs exclusively on hydrogen, is based on a block that HMC already had in its series models. This innovative design not only streamlines the production process but also ensures a smoother transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles for consumers.

One of the key advantages of this hydrogen engine is its high thermal efficiency, maintaining a high level of performance from startup to full load. Furthermore, the engine's emissions are negligible compared to fossil fuel-powered engines, reducing CO2 emissions by 99% and particulate matter by 90%, and emitting only 15 ppm of NOX.

The hydrogen engine's efficiency is further improved by injecting hydrogen directly into the cylinder, a process that outshines traditional thermal engines in terms of potential for reducing polluting emissions. The engine's performance has also been boosted with the use of a turbocharger.

Durability tests on the engine will be carried out in collaboration with HMC, with the results published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. The successful completion of these tests could mark a significant shift in the future of mobility, with the goal of implementing this technology in passenger vehicles first, followed by commercial vehicles and electric power generation units.

The advent of these hydrogen engines could potentially lead to a significant shift in the future of cars, as they could replace fossil fuel-powered cars, such as gasoline and diesel cars. However, it is important to note that the availability of hydrogen charging stations and demand are still not as common as electric charging stations.

The focus in the future of mobility is on reducing polluting emissions as much as possible. Some experts believe that hydrogen could become the fuel of the future in the mobility sector, offering a promising solution to the challenge of bringing polluting emissions to zero. The development of this hydrogen engine by Hyundai-Kia and KIMM could set a precedent for the sector, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.

In addition, a recent report suggests that future electric motors might not rely on China, implying a potential diversification of the global electric vehicle market. This development could further strengthen the case for hydrogen as a viable and independent energy source for the mobility sector.
