Famous Indian film personalities under scrutiny for their involvement in illicit internet betting operations

In a recent development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India is investigating a group of celebrities, including Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, Prakash Raj, and Lakshmi Manchu, among others, for their alleged involvement in promoting illegal online gambling platforms. The investigation originated from multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by the police in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, targeting approximately 29 celebrities and influencers.

The ED's probe focuses on the advertising and promotion of these platforms, with concerns about potential money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The investigation has gained attention due to concerns about the influence of celebrities on youth, and the potential harm that illegal gambling platforms might cause.

Rana Daggubati was questioned for several hours regarding his endorsement agreement related to these platforms and their financial transactions. Vijay Deverakonda, on the other hand, clarified that his endorsements were for skill-based gaming platforms legally permitted in certain regions, not illegal gambling. Prakash Raj admitted to a single betting app advertisement in 2016 but claimed he did not accept payment. Lakshmi Manchu was also summoned to appear before the ED as part of the investigation.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint by businessman Faniindra Sarma, a resident of Telangana state. Sarma expressed initial suspicions about investing in such a platform and filed a police report. He alleged that these apps, promoted by celebrities, are reportedly circulating among youth in his community.

The ED is also studying the advertising contracts signed by actors and platforms, and it is possible that the list of those questioned may expand, and criminal cases may be initiated against some public figures. The investigation is ongoing, with ED officials gathering evidence, examining financial transactions, and studying advertising contracts.

Notably, Vijay Deverakonda has publicly clarified his stance on the matter, stating that his endorsements were for legal gaming platforms, not illegal gambling. Prakash Raj, however, has declined to make public comments on the matter.

The investigation into the advertising and promotion of illegal online gambling platforms in India is a significant development, highlighting the need for celebrities to exercise caution when endorsing such platforms. The ED's investigation is a reminder that promoting illegal activities can have serious consequences, and public figures must be mindful of their actions and their impact on society.
