Family mourns loss: "Both children's playthings were destroyed by a blaze"

In the aftermath, Leipzig's eastern district reeks of smoke and is riddled with blackened remains: Two garden shacks were utterly incinerated overnight, preceding Monday. The disheartening trend continues, as another similar incident occurred mere weeks earlier, a few kilometers away.

A fire broke out at Allotment Garden "Stuenz" on Stuenz-Moelkauer-Weg, located in the district of Sellerhausen-Stuenz, on the first of September. The fire department faced difficulties reaching the fire due to the sheds being located at the very end of the allotment.

The fire destroyed a shed belonging to a young couple who had taken over the plot six years ago. They had recently refurbished and painted their allotment, only to have it destroyed by the fire. The woman stated that all their children's toys were stored in the burned shed.

The fire at Allotment Garden "Stuenz" occurred on Monday night and later spread to the neighboring shed. The woman at the allotment was visibly upset, expressing concern about the future. Some evidence suggests that the fire was arson, but negligent arson, such as from barbecue coals, is not currently being considered as a cause for the fire.

Arson investigators from the police examined the remains of the fire at Allotment Garden "Stuenz" on Friday afternoon. The young couple had spent almost every afternoon at their allotment with their two young children. The firefighters entered Allotment Garden "Stuenz" from the neighboring allotment association after breaking open the gate.

This is not the first fire at Leipzig's allotment gardens. A garden shed burned down in an allotment at Oststraße in Stötteritz at the beginning of August, separate from the fire at Allotment Garden "Stuenz". The suspected arson at the "Stuenz" allotment garden in Leipzig on September 1 is believed to have been committed by unknown perpetrators; there is no confirmed information on the responsible individuals.

The allotment owner reported that everything was in order at Allotment Garden "Stuenz" the day before the fire. The fires at Leipzig's allotment gardens seem to be recurring incidents. The community is left to hope for the safety and security of their cherished allotments in the future.
