Exploring Dormagen's Landmarks: Rhine Tower and Air-Raid Shelters Unveiled
The picturesque town of Dormagen is set to open its doors to the public for a unique and enlightening experience on Sunday, September 14, 2023. The nationwide event, initiated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, is a celebration of history, culture, and community.
One of the most anticipated highlights of the day is the reopening of the iconic Rheinturm, a landmark of Dormagen that has been vacant for over 20 years. Visitors can book guided tours of the Rheinturm, available every full hour starting from 12 p.m., through the official website www.tinyurl.com/fuehrungrheinturm. The tours, limited to 20 people each, offer a rare opportunity to explore this historical structure.
The event program includes a diverse range of sites, from the Roman UNESCO World Heritage site, Knechtsteden Monastery, to the memorial cemetery in Dormagen-Mitte, the Jewish cemetery in the Zons Heath, and the Bunker Memorial Site in the Raphaelshaus. Other notable sites include the historic Friedestrom castle, Kreismuseum, Rheintorkapelle, windmill, air raid shelter at the Feldtor, and more.
Gerd Bock, the new honorary monument care officer, will provide an advisory offer from 12 to 2 p.m. on September 14 under the chestnut tree on the Mühlenstraße in the Zons old town. Visitors can engage in Ratgebergespräche, or advisory conversations, with Gerd Bock, gaining insights into the rich history and preservation of these monuments.
The theme for this year's event is "Worthwhile: Priceless or Irreplaceable?", encouraging participants to reflect on the value and significance of these historical sites.
Numerous monument owners and volunteers are making a varied local offer possible, ensuring a memorable and educational day for all. For additional information about the Day of Open Monuments, visit www.ourwebsite/denkmaltag.
