Exploring Berlin with Photographer Michael Wesely: A Photography Discussion
In a captivating podcast conversation, Berlin photographer Michael Wesely discusses his artistic technique, the significance of memory in urban space, and his personal motivation. The episode, titled "City Photography as a Time Machine; How Visible is the Invisible?", is now available on Spotify.
The podcast interview was inspired by Wesely's exhibition, "Images Over Images", which was held at the Paper Hall of the Wasmuth Verlag from May 7 to June 13, 2025. This exhibition showcased 54 selected images from Wesely's unique visual series, "Doubleday".
In the "Doubleday" series, Wesely overlays historical war-torn images of Berlin with current photographs taken from the same vantage points. This innovative approach condenses images of Berlin in 1945 and today's Berlin into a single image, turning the past not into an archive, but an open question to the future.
The exhibition made visible the traces of 1945 in today's city through Wesely's images. It demonstrated how the Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz, or Gendarmenmarkt have changed in architecture, traffic, and fashion.
The "Doubleday" series is a unique visual format that combines history and the present in a single image. It invites listeners to tune in and delve into the past and present of Berlin, encouraging reflection on the city's transformation over time.
