Exploring Apple's Upcoming Second-Generation AR/VR Headset Reveals

Apple's second-generation mixed reality headset is in development, and it's expected to be a game-changer in the immersive technology space. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the second-generation headset is anticipated to arrive in the second half of 2024.

The technology of choice for this upcoming headset is Micro OLED, a highly compact OLED microdisplay that offers very high resolution and contrast suitable for close-viewing applications like AR/VR. This technology enables ultrahigh pixel densities in small display sizes, crucial for immersive experiences. LG Display, which is producing the Micro-OLED technology for Apple's second-generation AR/VR headset, leverages advanced OLED panels and microLED-related innovations for these microdisplays, aiming for superior image quality, brightness, and efficiency specifically tailored for Apple's AR/VR device.

Micro OLED panels mount an OLED layer on a silicon substrate, making them thinner, consuming less power, and delivering excellent picture quality with perfect black levels and high brightness. LG's micro OLED panels will be used for manufacturing Apple's second-generation headset.

In contrast to the current leader in the space, the Oculus Quest 2, the price of Apple's upcoming AR/VR headset, due to the use of micro OLED and other advanced features, is anticipated to be a high $3,000. However, it is hoped that the second-generation headset will have a lower price compared to the first-generation model.

Apple is attempting to distance itself from potential rival Sony, which is a major player in the VR space with its PlayStation VR headset. LG is aiming to overtake Sony as the primary supplier for the main micro OLED display on the second-generation headset.

The first-generation mixed reality headset was not mentioned at Apple's WWDC event last week. All rumors suggest a late 2022 or early 2023 reveal and a release in mid/late next year for the first-generation headset. LG will provide an outer OLED "indicator" screen for the first-generation headset, while Sony is currently the main micro OLED panel supplier for Apple's first mixed reality headset.

The South Korean outfit The Elec reported that LG Display will attempt to supply the micro OLED panel for Apple's second-generation headset. The second-generation headset is expected to have a lighter design, improved battery life, and faster performance.

Stay tuned for more updates on Apple's second-generation mixed reality headset as they become available.
