Minneapolis's Kickernick Gallery Celebrates One Year Anniversary with Women's Art Exhibit

After a successful first year, the Kickernick Gallery in Minneapolis's warehouse district is gearing up for its One Year Anniversary show on September 18. The gallery, which leans toward urban-inspired work, is the brainchild of Christy Frank, a seasoned art curator with a background in art history.

For 13 years, Frank ran a furniture and home goods store in Minneapolis, also serving as a custom frame shop and art gallery. Her passion for art led her to intern under Kathleen Daniels at the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery and later at Rogue Buddha Gallery and the Minnesota Historical Society.

Frank's curation process is unique and thoughtful. She considers her response to the art, subject matter, urban-inspired work, seasons, price point and accessibility, mixing seasoned and emerging artists, variety of mediums, subject matter, and price points, quality, skill, and marketability. This approach has allowed her to work with over 100 local artists, sell local artwork, and host nearly 75 art openings during her store ownership.

In July 2024, Frank was approached by the Kickernick Gallery's owner about the curator position, recognising her connections and experience with the local art scene. Since then, she has been curating exhibits that reflect her vision and the gallery's urban setting.

One of the upcoming exhibits is an exciting collaboration with the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota (WARM), a group of women who opened a gallery in Minneapolis's warehouse district in 1976. This spring, the Kickernick Gallery will host an exhibit featuring work by as many of the WARM members as possible, marking the collective's 50th anniversary.

Frank is honoured to be involved with this part of women's art history. She believes in the importance of supporting local artists and making art accessible to everyone. Her curation process also involves placing high-priced art next to more affordable pieces, ensuring that there's something for everyone at the Kickernick Gallery.

As the Kickernick Gallery enters its second year, it continues to be a vibrant part of Minneapolis's art scene, working with 30 local artists for its upcoming One Year Anniversary show. Frank's dedication to her craft and her commitment to the local art community make the Kickernick Gallery a must-visit destination for art lovers in Minneapolis.
