Exploring the World of Music: An Introduction to Musical Studies

Musical Studies is an exciting and enriching programme offered jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. This interdisciplinary field invites students to delve into the intricate world of music, examining how cultures around the globe structure and perceive music.

At the heart of the Musical Studies programme lies a focus on critical thinking, written and verbal communication, and practical musical experience. Students will explore questions about the cultural significance of music, its historical evolution, and its role in political, economic, and social contexts.

For those interested in pursuing Musical Studies, a solid foundation in music theory, musicianship skills, and musicology is essential. Students are encouraged to begin with courses such as AAST 171, MUSY 100, MUSY 101, MUTH 101, MUTH 131, and TECH 103.

The Musical Studies major can be tailored to suit students' individual interests and schedules, with the option to complete the programme in three or four years. Examples of possible course sequences are provided in the programme's catalogue.

In addition to theoretical studies, all Musical Studies majors must participate for at least two semesters in faculty-led music ensembles. This hands-on experience allows students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting.

For those wishing to take Aural Skills or Music Theory courses, a placement test is required, as outlined on the Conservatory's Placement Tests page. It is important to note that AP scores do not qualify students for placement within the MUTH sequence.

Students who have scored 4 or 5 on the AP Music Theory exam may transfer this credit as MUTH 600, equivalent to one full course towards graduation requirements.

Musical Studies also offers a range of courses for non-majors or those with a general interest in the subject. These courses provide an engaging introduction to the diverse themes explored within the field, including tragic and humorous stories, societal and political issues, often based on literary or film sources. These themes are interpreted and structured differently across cultures worldwide, with musicals of primarily U.S. and British origin dominating, but adaptations and local productions reflecting varied cultural contexts.
