In the charming town of Middleburg, Virginia, nestled between Alexandria and Winchester, a significant change has been introduced to cater to the growing number of electric vehicle (EV) owners. Approximately 45 miles west of Washington, D.C., Middleburg, with a population of less than 1,000 people, is renowned for its equestrian traditions, wineries, a film festival, a five-star resort, and a Christmas parade featuring horses and hound dogs.

The installation of an electric vehicle fast charger in Middleburg was a collaborative effort between the Middleburg Community and the Virginia Department of Transportation. The move was influenced by the need for quick charging options, as the town lacked devices in the region that could fill up a car battery in an hour or less.

While the installation was not primarily aimed at attracting new visitors, it was designed to keep those already passing through happy. With the increasing number of EVs on the roads, it was essential to provide a convenient charging solution, allowing visitors to browse local art galleries and shops, grab dinner, or visit other attractions they may have otherwise missed while their vehicles charged.

However, installing an expansive bay with multiple chargers was not logistically feasible in the small Town Hall parking lot. Instead, a single fast charger was installed, which was deemed sufficient for the town's needs. Despite the limited number of chargers, Middleburg's decision was influenced by the need to reduce its carbon footprint.

Middleburg is part of Loudoun County, the nation's richest county, and is located along U.S. Route 50, a 80-mile stretch in Virginia rich in American history and culture, featuring vineyards, battlefields, high-end resorts, and more. Loudoun County has some of the most robust EV adoption numbers in Virginia, making the installation of the charger even more timely.

Interestingly, Kaye, a local resident, noticed a high number of EVs in town, suggesting a growing trend towards electric vehicles among both visitors and residents. The town's lack of fast charging options was a potential deterrent for EV tourism, a concept where towns off the beaten path seek to attract travelers with charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

With the installation of the fast charger, Middleburg joins the growing number of towns embracing EV tourism, ensuring a sustainable future while preserving its historic charm. As the town continues to attract visitors from all over the world and the greater D.C. area, the fast charger will undoubtedly play a crucial role in reducing the town's carbon emissions, one electric vehicle at a time.
