In the latest report by the German Insurance Association (GDV), around 3.5 million fully or partially insured individuals will see an improvement in their regional classifications for motor vehicle insurance in 2022. On the other hand, approximately 5 million car drivers will find themselves in higher regional classes.

The GDV classifies 413 registration districts in Germany annually, with the index for motor vehicle liability insurance serving as the basis for these classifications. The national average for this index is set at 100. Regions with values below this mark indicate better damage statistics compared to the average, while higher values signify worse statistics.

The region with the lowest index value for motor vehicle liability insurance is the Prignitz in Brandenburg, with a value of 69.73. This means damages in this area are 30% lower than the national average. Conversely, Berlin tops the list with the highest index value of 137.26, indicating damages more than a third higher than the national average. However, it's worth noting that the German city with the worst damage statistics in motor vehicle liability insurance in 2022 remains unnamed in the available search results.

In comprehensive insurance, Wesermarsch in Brake (Lower Saxony) has an index value of 76.17, while Ostallgäu (Bavaria) holds the highest index value of 204.09 in partial insurance. The highest index value for comprehensive insurance is found in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Bavaria) with a value of 143.00. In partial insurance, Bamberg (Bavaria) has an index value of 56.45.

Jörg Asmussen, GDV CEO, reports that 56 districts and around 5 million car drivers will have higher regional classes for motor vehicle liability insurance in 2022, while 52 districts and around 4.2 million car drivers will benefit from better regional classes. It's important to note that a change in the regional class does not necessarily reflect the development of the entire motor vehicle insurance premium, as emphasized by Asmussen.

A better classification in the regional class means a more favorable insurance premium, according to general information. The regional classes for 305 districts and around 32.8 million motor vehicle liability insurance policyholders will remain the same in 2022, as stated by Asmussen.

These changes in regional classifications aim to provide a more accurate representation of the damage statistics across Germany, ultimately influencing the premiums paid by insured individuals. It's recommended that drivers review their insurance policies regularly to ensure they are getting the best possible rates.
