Expansion endeavor for Mack-Pyramid structure
The city of Monheim am Rhein is set to undergo a significant transformation with the expansion of the Mack Pyramid, a project that promises to provide additional exhibition spaces, storage areas for art collections, and modernized spaces in the original pyramid.
Swiss construction company Nüssli has been contracted for the project, and they are proud to realize the vision of the city for this expansion. The project involves the construction of a second, mirrored pyramid above the existing Mack Pyramid, with both pyramid peaks touching in the air, symbolizing artistic balance and creative tension.
The deep foundation of the expansion project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2025. Construction of the staircases is planned to be finished by the end of 2025, after which steel construction will begin immediately. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2027.
The expansion presents high demands on statics and construction coordination due to difficult soil conditions and parallel new construction and renovation work. The supporting structure of the Mack Pyramid expansion project is made of steel and reinforced concrete. The interior fit-out will use wooden, drywall, and steel building elements.
The Mack Pyramid is the brainchild of Heinz Mack, a German artist and co-founder of the ZERO movement, known for his light-flooded sculptures, kinetic objects, and large-scale installations. The expansion project is expected to be a significant cultural influence beyond the city limits and to enhance the city entrance as an impressive landmark.
Mayor Daniel Zimmermann emphasized the importance of the project for securing and further developing the historical art treasure in the Mack Pyramid. The expansion is considered an architectural highlight and a cultural impetus for the entire region.
In addition to the Mack Pyramid expansion, a new Kita (Children's Day Care Center) in Dingolfing is under construction, using regional materials and glass in its design.
The topping-out ceremony for the Mack Pyramid expansion project is scheduled for March 2026, coinciding with Heinz Mack's 95th birthday. Udo Baader, the Head of Project Management Special Projects at Nüssli, is involved in the project and is looking forward to its completion in summer 2027. The project is covered in General Construction Journal 36/2025.
