In the realm of academic and political circles, a significant development has emerged in the southwest German state of Baden-Württemberg. The state's Science Minister, Petra Olschowski (Greens), has announced a program aimed at supporting American scientists who wish to come to the region.

This initiative comes at a time when the American President, Donald Trump, has been criticised for his attacks on free science. The program is intended to provide a sanctuary for scientists seeking academic freedom and collaboration, unhindered by political interference.

Olschowski's announcement follows a strong call from Michael Joukov (Greens), who emphasised the importance of free and international science as a cornerstone of democracy. Joukov also highlighted the need for urgent investment in buildings and technology in Baden-Württemberg, to ensure that the state remains a competitive hub for scientific research.

The program's specific details are yet to be disclosed, but it is clear that it has garnered widespread support. MPs from the Greens, CDU, SPD, and FDP in the state parliament have all expressed their consensus on this issue. Dorothea Kliche-Behnke (SPD) and Jennifer Doudna, who initiated a support program for American scientists in the region, also called for the abolition of tuition fees for non-EU international students, which were introduced in 2017.

As the world grapples with the implications of political interference in scientific research, Baden-Württemberg stands as a beacon of hope for academic freedom and collaboration. The initiative is a testament to the power of collective action and the shared belief that science is a fundamental pillar of democracy.
