Expanding Digital Politics in Wuppertal: Online Influence on the Rise
In the heart of Wuppertal, a collaborative effort among local organisations has resulted in the creation of a unique platform designed to foster citizen participation and engagement. The website, www.politik-in-wuppertal.de, was launched on March 1, 2021, marking a significant step towards promoting civic involvement in the city.
The website's inception was a joint project involving the Inclusion Office at Bergische Volkshochschule, the team for citizen participation and engagement of the city, and other local organisations such as the Seniorenbeirat (Senior Citizens' Advisory Council), the Beirat der Menschen mit Behinderung (Advisory Council for People with Disabilities), and the Stadtrat (City Council) of Wuppertal. Political factions, social organisations, and community associations in Wuppertal also contributed to the content and translation efforts to ensure the website is accessible and representative of diverse community interests.
The website offers specialist information in simple language, making it an invaluable resource for people with learning difficulties, those learning German, or those with reading difficulties such as dementia. A total of 21 texts have been translated into easy-to-read language to cater to a wide audience. Four new contents have been added to the website: Committees/Boards, Senior Advisory Council, Advisory Board for People with Disabilities, and Researching.
The website is not just a repository of information; it actively encourages citizen involvement and provides opportunities to vote in local elections. Tips are available for beginners and advanced participants in various categories, including "Educate yourself" and "Get involved". Whether you're new to politics or a seasoned participant, the website offers resources to help you engage in local issues.
In the coming weeks, promotional materials such as postcards, beer mats, posters, and canvas bags will be distributed throughout the city to raise awareness about the website and its mission.
If you have any questions or would like to get involved, you can contact Jonathan Seim, the contact person for the team for citizen participation and citizen engagement of the city, at [email protected].
